Landscapes

There are many different landscapes on Earth.  Some of them are incredible!  Look at these photos of some impressive landscapes from around the globe! :)

How can we protect our landscapes?
  • Look after plants and animals
  • Make national parks
  • Don´t throw rubbish in the countryside
  • Don´t build in the middle of natural landscapes.

6.1 What types of landscape are there?

On the Earth there are many types of landscape.  Some are inland, others are coastal.  Some are flat and others are mountainous.

This is an inland landscape.  It is FAR from the ocean or sea.

This is a coastal landscape. It is where the land meets the sea or ocean.

 Some landscapes are flat.

Some landscapes are mountainous.

Why do landscapes change?

Natural phenomena: rain, wind, snow, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods

Human elements: buildings, houses, factories, schools, roads

Here you can see a video about one of the natural phenomena that changes the landscape: VOLCANOES!

6.2 What are inland landscapes like?

A mountain is part of the land that sticks up above the land around it.

A hill is a small mountain.

Several mountains together form a mountain range.

A valley is the low land between mountains (usually rivers flow through valleys.)

A plain is a large area of flat land at sea level.

A plateau is a plain that is more than 200 meters above sea level

A depression is a plain that is lower than the land around it.

6.3 What are coastal landscapes like?

The coast is the part of the land next to the sea or ocean.  Some coastlines are straight and others are not.

On the coast you can find cliffs and beaches.

A peninsula is land surrounded by the sea on all sides except one.  Spain and Portugal form the Iberian Peninsula.

An island is completely surrounded by the sea.  Tenerife is an island.

An archipelago is a group of islands close together.  The Canary islands form an archipelago.

A bay is the area of the sea that cuts into the land.  The Bahía de la Concha is a famous bay in San Sebastian.

6.4 What are the cardinal points?

 North, South, East, West.

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.

A compass is an instrument with a magnet and a needle.  The needle always points North so that you can find your way.
