Welcome to the Third Grade Science Blog!
Good Scientists are always curious,
so I hope you check the blog often as
we continue investigate the

MACHINES!!!!

Machines make life easier, but it´s important to be careful and follow safety rules because many are dangerous.

10.1  What is a machine?

A machine is something that makes work easier

There are 2 types of machines:

Simple machines often have only 1 or 2 parts.  These are a few examples of simple machines.

Complex machines can have more parts or even be a combination of different machines.  These are some examples of complex machines.

Machines need energy to work.

Energy can come from humans, animals, electricity, or fuel like petrol or gasoline. Energy can also come from the sun, wind, or water.

10.2 Which machines did people have at different times in history?

The Stone Age

People had stones and animal bones used for hunting and painting

In Medieval Times people used the wheel.  They also used tools like a spade or rake on the farm.  They only had animals or humans for energy sources.

In the Age of Discovery people wanted to travel. They invented tools and machines to make boats.  Another invention was the printing press which helped to make books.

Our Times
We have tools, but now we use factories with complex machines that make objects very fast.

10.3 Who uses machines?

People use machines every day to help us with

Housework

to move from place to place

Communicate
and enjoy our free time
People also use machines in their jobs.  They use simple and complex machines to do their work.

10.4 Which machines are very dangerous?

It is important to take precautions and follow safety rules when using dangerous machines.

People must take a driving exam, protect their eyes when using a drill or use a mask if they work in a laboratory.

Machines help us do lots of things.  Can you imagine building a house without machines?  Or making our science book without machines?  Look at this amazing video showing us how a house was built (all in 1 minute!!!)
