Plants

1.1 What are the characteristics of plants?

Plants are living things.

Plants need water, air, sunlight and minerals.

Plants make their own food.

Plants form seeds to reproduce.

Plants cannot move by themselves, but they are affected by their environment

Main parts of a plant:

The roots: anchor the plant and keep it in the ground.

The stem: connects the roots with the leaves.

The leaves: make food for the plant and give off oxygen

The flowers: contain the reproductive organs of a plant

1.2 What do roots, stems and leaves look like?

Roots can be thick (like a carrot)  or hairy (like an onion).

Woody stems are hard and rigid, for example the stem of a tree.

Green stems are soft and flexible

Leaves can be diferent shapes: round, oval, needle-shaped, or heart-shaped.

Leaves can also have a smooth edge or a toothed edge.

4.3 How do seeds and fruit form from a flower?

Some plants have flowers.  The flowers contain the male and female reproductive organs.  The seeds form inside the flower.  The fruit forms around the seeds.

Step by Step:

1. The pollen grain falls from the stamen down the stigma and into the ovule.

2. The ovule and the pollen grain join together to make a seed.

3. The seed grows inside the ovary and turns into a fruit.

Here you can watch an episode of The Magic School Bus that explains things in a fun way :)

4.4 How can we classify plants?

There are many different types of plants.  According to its type of stem, a plant can be:

1. A tree.  A tree has a woody stem called a trunk and branches that grow out of the trunk to support the leaves, flowers and fruits.

2. Bushes are plants with woody stems but without a trunk.  The branches grow near the ground.

3. Grasses, (like wheat) are small plants.  Their stems are green, soft and flexible.

4.5 What are plants used for?

Plants have lots of uses: food, to make clothing, wood from trees to make buildings, furniture, paper, medicines, perfume, soap, etc.  The list goes on and on!
