In Unit 5 we are learning about Water on Earth.

Did you know that more than 75% of the Earth is made up of water??? That´s a lot!!! In this unit we are going to learn a little bit more about the characteristics of water, why it is important, how the water cycle works, and the difference between fresh water and salt water.

Introduction:

Water is an important resource on our planet.  All living things need water to survive, so we have to make sure to protect our water.

Here are some ways to PROTECT our WATER

1. Don´t throw rubbish in the river or sea!

2. Make sure to only use the washing machine if it is full!

3. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth!

4. Don´t waste water when you are watering your garden or plants.

Can you think of more???

5.1  What is water like?

Water is made from 2 elements:  hydrogen and oxygen

Water has 3 important characteristics!!!

1. It has no taste.
2. It has no color.
3. It has no smell.

Water is found in 3 different STATES:
 Liquid, Solid, and Vapour

But HOW does it change from one state to the other????

When you warm solid water it MELTS into a liquid.

When you cool liquid water it FREEZES into a solid.

When you warm liquid water it EVAPORATES into water vapour.

When you cool water vapour it CONDENSES into a liquid.

5.2 What is the Water Cycle?

Here´s a song to help you remember how the water cycle works :)  Click on the picture below!

5.3 Where do we find fresh water?

Fresh water comes from
rain, snow and ice

You can find it in lakes, rivers and groundwater.

5.4 What are the different parts of rivers?
A river is a current of fresh water that flows from a high place to a lower place.

It has 3 main parts: the upper course, middle course and lower course.

5.5  Where do we find salt water?

Most of the earth is covered in salt water in the form of seas and oceans.
