Living Together

11.1 What groups of people do we belong to?

Family:

Families can look different, but they all have some things in common:

strong bonds between the members
respect
share the daily tasks

At home, we can help the adults in our families in many ways:
make your bed

lay the table

clear the table
wash the dishes

School:  At school we can learn new things, but we also learn to live together and make new friends.

respect people from other cultures

solve problems by talking about them

join in with other people in a group

Neighbours.  Its important to respect and get on well with our neighbours.

11.2 What helps us to live together happily in a community?

In towns and cities we need public services , laws and rules

Public Service Workers:

Road sweepers

Gardeners

Maintenance workers

Postal workers

Firefighters

Police officers

Bus and train drivers

Doctors

Teachers

Click here to play a game with the names of the different public service workers.

Laws and rules help to keep us safe in our communities.  Most of the rules and laws remind us to respect our neighbours and our town.

What are plans and maps for?

A plan represents a room or a building, but on a smaller scale.  It helps people find places they are looing for.

Maps are plans of countries, cities or towns.  We can see the position of the streets, squares, parks and the most important buildings and places.

Here is a map game where you can test your knowledge of the countries in Europe.  Do you know them all? Click on the game piece to find out!!!

How is a town council elected?

A town council is made up of the mayor or mayoress and the councillors.  They organize the public services for the inhabitants and solve problems in the town.

The town council is elected every 4 years in elections.

The mayor is the head of the town council and each councillor is responsible for a specific area (organizing cultural events, transportation)

Choosing a new town council:

1. election campaign
2. Vote (18 + years old)
3. count the vote
4. councillors choose the new mayor
