Unit 14: Time and History

How do we measure time?

Units of time organized around a day:

One day has 24 hours.
One hour has 60 minutes
One minute has 60 seconds.

Here are a few games for you to practice telling time in English :)  Click on the clocks to play!

Weeks, months and years are the units of time that are longer than a day.  We measure these units with a calendar.

One week has 7 days
One month has 28, 30, or 31 days
One year has 365 days.

Units of time organized around years.

A decade is 10 years.
A century is 100 years.
A millennium is 1,000 years.

What is history?

History is the record of all the events that happen as time passes.

We can learn a lot from history!

Our personal history: the history of what happens in our lives.

Our family history is the history of our parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles and cousins.

Our ancestors are people in our family who lived a long time ago, like the grandparents of our grandparents. The events in their lives make up our family history.

Objects have a history too!
There are objects that we use every day like our mobile phones or the wrist watch.  Years ago, these things didn´t exist.

The objects we use tell a story about our lives.

How do we know what happened in the past?

Documents

Traditions

Historic Buildings and Objects

We can learn more by going to a museum or visiting historical sites.

We can also learn about the past from historical fiction books like The Magic Treehouse series

Spain has a very interesting history.  Here you can learn about the Alhambra!
